The new iphone 5 Charger

With the release of the new iPhone, Apple made a brash decision – new iPhone 5 Chargers. Many users are strapped for cash, annoyed that they have to fork over $40 for a charger when their old iPhone charger could be purchased for as little as $4. From Apple’s standpoint, changing the charger allows them to keep the profits from the sales.

Given that their officially authorized chargers are more costly than “knock offs”, it only makes sense that they would change them. However, the previous charger has been in place on every single Apple device since 2003, all accessories, docks, speakers and hard-wired car cables use the old design. Apple does offer a conversion kit that can plug into your old device for a fairly reasonable cost of $20.

Off-Brand iPhone 5 Chargers – Are They Legit?

Reading the reviews on Amazon, it seems like it is roughly a 50/50 chance. The Off-Brand iphone 5 chargers are not officially authorized by Apple, which means their is no guarantee. Many users report connections that go “in and out” and consistent problems syncing. That being said, in our test of roughly 50 chargers, we had a decent success rate. Only a few showed any issues at all.

Early this November, Belkin made the announcement that they are one of two retailers for the new iphone 5 accessories, and the only third party retailer.. Their iphone 5 chargers will contain both the USB and the lightning port, much like the cords sold directly from Apple. Currently, they are releasing a car charger and a charging dock.

The charging cord, car charger, and charging dock will retail at $29.99, stores are expected to get shipments by early-December.

The newly released car charger, packaged as the “Belkin Car Charger for Lightning” is the first Apple approved iPhone accessory that uses the Lightning cable. The car charger is very similar to any other car charger, except this charger has a hardwired four foot cable attached to it. It does not have a removable USB. This means it will be easier for  iPhone 5, iPad mini, or iPad fourth generation users to charge their devices while driving, but it will not be able to “double up” as an Android charger.

What is the “Lightning Charger”

The new Lightning Charger was first released at the press conference when Apple announced their new 2012 lineup and iPhone 5. Unlike the previous chargers, the iphone 5 charger has rights owned exclusively by apple, it is “proprietary”. This new Lightning cable is set to replace the 30-pin connector commonly found on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod since 2003. Just like the old connector, the new Lightning connector will be used to charge and sync device.

Many consumers are asking the question: “How is it different from the 30-pin connector?” – The most important changes that it is much smaller, infact, it’s 80 percent smaller. Apple reports that it is significantly sturdier, and fully reversible. No longer will you have to worry about properly lining up the top or bottom when you plug it into your device. Apple officials also report that it is fully digital. Their new “eight-signal design” can adapt to the functionality that it needs to utilize when connected.
